Pooch Patrol Scoop 🐶 January 2024
Hi fellow pawparents,
One of the things I kept telling my sons last year was to work with what you have - not what you want.
Zach has been pushing shopping carts in the rain and snow at a grocery store. It's hard and boring work but he's making money, saving for college, and staying busy. I remind him that when he feels like quitting.
I've been there too, taking random jobs to survive:
- Delivering phonebooks in Santa Cruz on foot
- Working as a stockman at K-Mart pushing carts all day 😆
- Being a host for Olive Garden was very brutal, mentally
- Building 15' Christmas trees and furniture for Staples
- Restocking Hallmark cards, store resets, and inventory
- Working for design agencies with tons of stress
As humans, we're always craving something new and fresh. Maybe it's part of our biology. We tend to chase the next big thing and forget what's in front of us.
So I ask you - do you really need that next thing or can you wait for it?
Patience is a crucial skillset to have, especially when times get tough or are out of our control. It makes you stronger.
Life is not about what you want, it's about what you already have.

General Updates 🐶

New Storm Safety Doors
Both our front and rear porch doors have been upgraded with new metal storm doors. They have locks and retractable screens which will be nice for creating airflow in the spring. The new doors provide additional security for our curious pooch clients, escape artists, and our kitties.
Rescue Shout Outs 👐

Northwest Animal Companions
They foster all of their rescued cats and dogs in the homes by very dedicated volunteers. They spend serious quality time getting to know these pets and their adoptive families, too - ensuring you’re matched with the perfect furry BFF.

Rescue Faerie
They bring homeless dogs & cats from Los Cabos, Mexico to Portland, OR. Volunteers fly down and personally escort dogs and cats back to PDX. Prior to traveling, each pet is spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Each animal's behavior is assessed for rehoming.
Small Biz Shout Outs 👐

Bonnie Fossek Massage Therapy
For more than 20 years, Bonnie has been a licensed massage therapist. Her style is rooted in deep tissue, mysofacial release and Craniosacral therapy providing a deep intuitive touch to seek and restore health in the body. If you've been in an car accident and need pain relief, that's her specialty. She's located in Montavilla.

Gini Chin's Beautiful Abyss
I met Gini a few years ago for lunch with my mentor, Rebecca Olachea. They inspired me to start Pooch Patrol. Gini is also a petcare provider and a maker of very cool things. Her latest project is a novel called The Beautiful Abyss. Need a good read for the winter and want to support a fellow small biz owner? Pick up her book and leave a review.

Mandy Grotie Art
You've probably seen Mandy's funky and uplifting art in the neighborhood. We met last year during the Montavilla Street Fair and she's now living in our hood. Check out her site to buy prints, greeting cards, coffee tables, and wood cutouts.
Fresh Tunes 🎧
Winter is officially here so it's time to start cozying up. Here's some tunes to enjoy:

Dogs - a really fun and wacky dog-themed joint effort with my neighbor James who spins at XRAY.fm
Todavía - I used to play classical guitar so had to make this mix inspired by Buzz Grazelle who's fretless guitar master
Keys & Horns - a lil' jazz mix perfect for being inside on cold, rainy, and snowy days
